Naked exclusion : Towards a behavioral approach to exclusive dealing ∗ Jan Boone †

چکیده
We report experimental results on exclusive dealing inspired by the literature on naked exclusion. Our key ndings are: First, exclusion of a more e cient entrant is a widespread phenomenon in lab markets. Second, allowing incumbents to discriminate between buyers increases exclusion rates compared to the non-discriminatory case only when payments to buyers can be o ered sequentially and secretly. Third, allowing discrimination does not lead to signi cant decreases in costs of exclusion. Accounting for the observation that buyers are more likely to accept an exclusive deal the higher is the payment, substantially improves the t between theoretical predictions and observed behavior.

Naked Exclusion in the Lab: the Case of Sequential Contracting*
In the context of the naked exclusion model of Rasmusen, Ramseyer and Wiley [1991] and Segal and Whinston [2000b], we examine whether sequential contracting is more conducive to exclusion in the lab, and whether it is cheaper for the incumbent than simultaneous contracting. We find that an incumbent who proposes contracts to buyers sequentially, excludes significantly more often than an incumbe...

An Offer You Can’t Refuse: Naked Exclusion, Refusal to Deal, and Exclusive Contracts Robert Kulick1 We introduce a model of anticompetitive exclusive dealing that provides a unified treatment of two of the major categories of potentially anticompetitive single-firm conduct recognized by the FTC: refusal to deal and exclusive purchase agreements. The exclusionary mechanism succeeds by turning th...
متن کاملNaked Exclusion and the Anticompetitive Accommodation of Entry
We model exclusive dealing when the incumbent and potential entrant offer differentiated products and buyers are downstream firms. While the resulting exclusive dealing is always anticompetitive, it does not necessarily involve foreclosure.
متن کاملAre Market-Share Contracts a Poor Man’s Exclusive Dealing?
Contracts that reference rivals have long been a focus of antitrust law and the subject of intense scholarly debate. This paper compares two such contracts, exclusive-dealing contracts and market-share contracts, in a model of naked exclusion. We discuss the different mechanisms through which each works and identify the fundamental tradeoff that arises: marketshare contracts are better at maxim...

In this paper, we investigated the Iranian organized money market, including 18 banks operating in the period of 2008-2015. To calculate the marginal cost (MC), we used a Translog Stochastic Frontier Cost Function. Findings based on the ...
